Chenrezig, the bodhisattva of compassion, was so moved by the suffering of sentient beings that he made a vow to benefit them all. Overwhelmed by the vastness of this task, his body shattered into a thousand pieces. The Buddhas recognized his sincere wish to aid all beings and blessed him. He took on a new form with a thousand arms, each hand possessing an eye to see the suffering of the world. This form allowed him to reach out and assist countless beings simultaneously.
