This thangka depicts Guru Padma Gyalpo (Tib. Pema Gyalpo), “The Lotus King,” one of the Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava. Representing the youthful and magnetizing aspect of enlightened activity, Padma Gyalpo is traditionally shown as a radiant prince seated in royal ease upon a lotus throne, adorned with silken robes and ornaments. According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, this manifestation appeared in the kingdom of Oddiyana and symbolizes the attractive power of wisdom, compassion, and enlightened presence. The surrounding imagery reflects the pure realm of Zangdok Palri (Copper-Colored Mountain), along with disciples and dakinis associated with Guru Rinpoche’s enlightened activity within the Nyingma tradition.
