One story of our tradition, told by Tulku Sangngag Rinpoche, is how Hayagriva was the embodiment of the liberation of the demon Rudra. Rudra is synomous with ego clinging, and legend tells how he wreaked havoc across the world with his formidable three heads and six arms. To counter this, a fierce embodiment of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) and Amitabha, emerged to vanquish him when Rudra unwittingly devoured Chenrezig, who had assumed the form of a horse. Chenrezig's triumph was marked by his horse-head bursting forth from Rudra's head, now taking hold of his body as Hayagriva, while the demon, having realized his wrongdoing, became a Dharma protector.
